Note: For all the accusations that have been thrown at him over the years, Sali Berisha deserves the proclamation non grata from the US and Great Britain. He may also deserve prison if investigated, tried and convicted by an independent justice. But his punishment a decade after fleeing power is 'late justice, lacking justice'.
Berisha has been declared non grata for corrupt ives during governance, interference in the justice system and minimum rule of law. According to what the former Prime Minister himself stated at this Friday's press conference, one of the cases related to Damir Fazlic.
Berisha is accused of protecting Damir Fazlic from Albanian justice in 2008. At the time, the Serb-Bosnian was accused of failing to justify the source of income for the purchase of a 90,000 square metre property in Porto Romano.
The Prosecution's suspicions related that the money had criminal sources, either from corrupt ives, or to organised crime. Fazlic had bought several other properties before registering his company "Croen Aquisition" in Albania. As proof, the prosecution also had a transfer of 1.7m euros from the Albanian banks to Damir Fazlic.
For this and other alleged cases, Berisha deserves to be investigated to the end and punished if she has responsibility. But the problem is that remembering to investigate and punish suspected corrupt ives a decade later does not discourage current powers from misrule.
And for misgovernance and forgiveness of state property (similar to the case of Damir Fazlic) Edi Rama has been accused since his first term, when concessions to health that the SPAK is investigating today exploded.
To follow up with the PpPs, the tender and other concessions and charges for inflating the cost of these tenders and concessions, where the culmination of the charges was the New Ring in the Palace segment with arrows formereagle circumcircle, an axis just over 2 km long, but costing over 40 ml euros.
For these, Edi Rama may not have direct criminal responsibility himself. As an example, in the case of health concessions, former Health Minister Ilir Beqaj is appearing in court, and for tenders and inflating their cost to justice, officials who have approved them are emerging.
But Eddie Rama's direct responsibility stems from the contraverse law for strategic investors. As chairman of the Strategic Investment Council with his firm, thousands and thousands of state properties on the coast have been forgiven for the oligarchs surrounding him in governance, a good part of which before 2013 surrounded Berisha.
The cherry on the cake of Eddie Rama's governance scandals is the fuel price board. Publicly he rose to protect citizens from rising prices, but with bizarre decisions to keep prices higher if the market were free, it was put in the service of oil oligarchs.
Therefore, today we are saying Berisha, Berisha, but Edi Rama is causing havoc". For all this, perhaps even the Drama after 10 years awaits non grata status from the US and the EU. But what's the point? Albanians need corruption to be fought in real time when it happens. After 10 years this war neither has effect nor discourages the powers from corruptive practices in governance.
