When protests erupted at the end of February and beginning of March after the abuse of the oligarchs with the increase in oil prices, Edi Rama announced that he would set up a transparency board that would protect the public interest.

The board was established through a normative act approved at a government meeting held on March 12. The act stipulates that seven members of the board belong to the government and another five to oil traders, where three would be from wholesalers and two from retailers.

The problem is that in Albania the market has been deformed for a long time and both the retail and wholesale markets are controlled by the same hands.

This is not the only problem, nor the biggest one. The biggest one is that all of the board's decision-making in these months may have protected anything but the public interest. Albania today has the highest oil price in the region and among the highest in the world.

The board, from an instrument for the protection of the public interest, as Edi Rama announced, has turned into the biggest finer of citizens, which is constantly emptying its pockets with the salty fuel prices.

But who speaks on behalf of the citizens within this board? According to the normative act, the government is represented on this board by the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, the Director of Taxes and the Director of Customs.

These are the reasons why the seven government representatives on this board have sided more with the representatives of the fuel oligarchs than with the citizens, who if the board did not exist would most likely buy a liter of oil cheaper than today.
