Police in the southern German state of Bavaria have detained a suspect during a fire at Adolf Hitler's mountain residence, Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the "Eagle's Nest".

Emergency services in Traunstein received a report of a fire in the building on Friday at 9:15 p.m. local time and firefighters found it engulfed in flames.

Difficult terrain hampered efforts to extinguish the fire, police said, while around 200 emergency services personnel were deployed to the scene.

The Nazi dictator used this residence, which is located above the town of Berchtesgaden, as a temporary government headquarters; there he met with military commanders to plan the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.

Hitler also used this area as a backdrop for propaganda films, in which he appeared as a lover of animals and nature.

A criminal investigation is underway to determine whether the detained person is connected to the fire.

Completed by the Nazis in 1938, the "Eagle's Nest" escaped destruction after their defeat in 1945.

Since then, it has become a popular tourist destination and is home to a mountain guesthouse.

It serves as "a sobering reminder of the abysses of the inhumane Nazi dictatorship," according to its official website.

During World War II, Hitler and his followers were responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of people, including the mass murder of European Jews.
