Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni could resign in March 2027, after the European Council summit expected to take place in Rome, paving the way for early parliamentary elections.
According to a report by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, this scenario was discussed by Meloni during recent meetings with her allies in the government, Antonio Tajani, Matteo Salvini and Maurizio Lupi.
According to the report, the European summit in Rome, scheduled to mark the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome, could serve as the last important international moment for the Prime Minister before asking the President of the Republic to dissolve Parliament and call early elections.
The first possible date for the elections would be May 16, 2027, while the scenario considered most likely is to hold parliamentary and local elections on the same day, during the month of June.
According to La Repubblica, merging the two electoral processes would be an opportunity to organize early votes, a few months before the end of the current parliamentary term, expected in the fall of 2027.
However, the leaders of the right-wing coalition continue to publicly state that the elections will be held as usual. At the moment, there is no official announcement about Meloni's resignation or the scheduling of early elections.
In parallel with discussions about parliamentary elections, the right-wing camp in Italy has accelerated work on selecting candidates for local elections in the country's main cities.
According to the report, among the cities where a significant race is expected to take place are Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Bologna. The selection of candidates has led to discussions within the coalition parties, as leaders aim to find an agreement before the election campaign enters its intensive phase.
In this context, the developments of the coming months will be decisive for determining the Italian political calendar, while the idea of early elections remains, so far, a scenario reported by the media and not an officially announced decision.
