Bank transactions in euros through the AIPS system have set a new record during 2023. According to the official data of the Bank of Albania, from January to October, over 200,000 payments were made through which a transaction volume of 3.2 billion euros was made. .
For 2022, the total value of transactions for the 12 months together was 3.3 billion euros. A figure that is expected to be exceeded this year, given that the last two months of the year also coincide with the holidays, which are accompanied by high volumes of transactions.
Meanwhile, this year, in addition to the volume of transactions carried out through the AIPS system, there is also an increase in their number. Last year ended with a total of 153,972, while for the period January-October 2023, we have 200,537 transactions. It was the month of October that recorded the largest volume of transactions in the common European currency, for a total of 24,354 euros.
The increase in the volume of transactions comes in a special year, when the amount of euros in the market has been very high, bringing its devaluation, regardless of the efforts of the Bank of Albania to withdraw as many euros as possible from the market through increased purchases .
The AIPS system has been operating since last year and is one of the most important developments in terms of the payment system in the country. Previously, national transfers in euros were made only through the use of accounts that Albanian banks have in correspondent banks abroad.
This route created time delays and, above all, much higher costs compared to Lek transfers. In practical terms, the transfers were directed to the parent banks, which also carried out actions with very high costs, which went up to 200-300 euros for each transaction, while the time delay was a problem in itself. Last year alone, about 10 million euros were saved in the form of transfers between correspondent banks.
