From 2018, the number of furs in our country has dropped significantly. There are about 280,000 fewer sheep by 2022, which speaks of the difficult situation of livestock farmers.
Faced with this situation, the increase in the price of sheep's milk by the processing companies to meet their needs, encouraged livestock farmers in recent years to invest more in the production of milk from wool.
Processors bought milk from them from 80 Lek in 2022 to 180 Lek in 2023. But due to the processing costs, they are today seeking to reduce the purchase price of milk from producers to 120 Lek/liter. This has fueled the conflict between the two categories of this food chain. The experts read the imbalance in the milk market as a situation caused by missing government policies.
Livestock and processors in conflict, why do we have less?
"We can find a temporary solution but the problem will appear. Undoubtedly, the farmers are right in their demands and it is delayed, but on the other hand, the industries have their right that their processing costs are high. We have a cost of living crisis that is happening in all countries", says expert Fatos Fico.
In 2022, from 1.08 million heads, 69 thousand tons of milk were produced, an average of 63 kg each. Among the counties with the highest production are Vlora, Korça, Gjirokastra and less in Durrës and Lezhë.
"We have a decrease in purchasing power and an increase in prices. In this situation, it is not only the industrial producers but also the consumers who will pay the price in the end. It does not depend only that the processors will give a higher price and the producer a lower one, but the purchasing power of consumers has decreased a lot."
The Competition Authority is investigating the largest milk processing companies for the price situation and has meanwhile committed to mediate the resolution of the conflict between them and the protesting farmers. But according to experts, the attention should be focused on providing wool food and subsidizing livestock farmers as in the countries of the region.
"It is a sham if the authority intervenes because the situation requires a fundamental solution that has not been done for a long time."
"We have to do more to earn food. Additional food is provided through imports as food is naturally scarce. We lack both which increase production for livestock."
According to experts, the whole situation will translate into a blow to the final consumer in higher prices.
From the total amount of milk collected, about 13 thousand tons was used for the production of milk for human consumption, while the amount dedicated to cheese fell by 3.8%, causing the prices in the markets to rise, not to drop again.
