Business increases profits from prices, reduces loans for liquidity, new loans

The increased prices throughout the year 2023 have continued to provide the business with high profits, as a result of a good liquidity situation, which is clearly reflected in the borrowing trends. Business, especially large ones, has significantly reduced the need for borrowing for liquidity needs, concentrating the demand for loans on investments. This has caused the slowdown in credit to the private sector during 2023 to be attributed mostly to the slowdown in credit for liquidity on the part of businesses.

The most recent survey conducted by the Bank of Albania reveals that, in line with the expectations of a quarter ago, the demand for loans from businesses was reported to be higher, while the net balances of the demand for loans from businesses have remained positive since the second quarter of 2021. It seems that the demands of businesses in financing their activity have not been restrained either by high interest rates or by the availability of high liquidity on the part of businesses. According to the second level Banks, the Net Balance of the demand of businesses for investment financing recorded high values this quarter as well, under the spirit of the continuation of an expanding cycle of production capacities in the country, stimulated among other things by business confidence.

Meanwhile, credit requests for the year that have just started are expected to be high, following last year's trends. In the first quarter of 2024, banks expect to be more accommodating in lending policies for the expansion of investments, as well as in supporting the exercise of the activity of small and medium-sized businesses. Meanwhile, for loans to businesses in financing inventories and working capital, as well as for loans to large businesses, banks expect to follow a somewhat more conservative approach for the first quarter of 2024.
