The suicide of an Albanian in England/ Disturbing report: Albanian asylum

"Albanian asylum seekers in the United Kingdom are being mistreated", says the Legal Unit for Children of Migrants and Refugees (MiCLU), which published a report that highlights a number of concerns about the treatment of Albanians in the immigration and asylum system in the United Kingdom.

This report was published following the suicide of an Albanian asylum seeker at the Bibby Stockholm accommodation center on December 12 and the hospital death on November 17 of another Albanian held at the Brook House Center (IRC) following a suicide attempt.

In its report, MiCLU warns that an increasingly hostile attitude towards Albanian asylum claims in the UK is causing a serious risk to the mental health and well-being of asylum seekers.

Furthermore, the experience as an Albanian is explained as different and more difficult compared to other nationalities due to the hostile environment they face.

The report states that all these contribute to feelings of hopelessness among the Albanian community.

Also, it is emphasized that the political discourse and the media are increasing the levels of discrimination and racism among them.

The widespread shortage of immigration legal aid lawyers is another concern.

The report concludes by calling for urgent action to provide adequate mental health support and prevent any further deaths among Albanians in Britain.
