A tourist visit to Albania did not go well for a 19-year-old from France. The day after arriving in Tirana with his family, the Frenchman with the initials KL was arrested after police found 8.2 grams of cannabis in his backpack.
The young man was checked by the police while traveling in a taxi he had taken from the former block to a hotel in Fushë-Krujë.
After 48 hours in custody, he was brought before the court, which ordered his release. According to the court, the investigation against him for the criminal offense of “production and sale of narcotics” will continue under the security measure of “compulsory appearance.” In the courtroom, the 20-year-old expressed remorse, claiming that he had not known that possession of cannabis was not allowed in Albania.
"I came to Albania to visit the country, together with my family. I want to say that I bought the narcotic substance on the street near a discotheque whose name I don't remember, from a person I don't know. I want to say that I bought the narcotic substance for personal use as I have been consuming it for six years. I was not aware that the consumption of narcotic substances was not allowed in the Albanian state, I also want to add that I am in a very serious emotional and health condition," said a French tourist KL
The fact that the 19-year-old tourist was unaware of criminal legislation in Albania was taken into consideration by both the prosecution and the courtroom to the extent required, as well as by Judge Adelajda Gjuzi.
In the decision to impose the measure, the court reasoned that "the amount of substance found was small, 8.2 grams including the packaging, the form of committing the offense is the easiest, through possession " and the fact that the suspect comes from a different culture in terms of the state's assessment of possession for the use of narcotics as a criminal offense.
