Albania restores military pilot school

Albania has taken another step in the modernization of the Armed Forces with the inauguration of the National Flight School, a project that aims to create national capacities for the preparation of pilots and air traffic controllers according to the methodology of NATO allies.

At the inauguration ceremony, which was also attended by Prime Minister Edi Rama, the Minister of Defense, Ermal Nufi, described the opening of the school as "a cornerstone in strengthening the capacities of the Air Force" and "the creation of a new strategic capacity for national defense and security."

"Today we mark the creation of a new strategic capacity for national defense and security, which is related to one of the most important elements of our defense power: human capacities," Nufi declared.

According to him, the school combines human capital, modern technology and international standards, creating the conditions for pilots, air traffic controllers and air personnel to be prepared according to the most advanced methodologies of allied countries.

The Minister announced that the training program will initially be supported by two new Bell 505 helicopters, which will serve as modern platforms for the training of future pilots.

"This school embodies the Albanian government's vision for the modernization of the Armed Forces and the strengthening of our defense capacities," he said, adding that the first trainees "are part of a great mission to build the modern tradition of Albanian aviation," he said.

For his part, Prime Minister Rama described the project as a strategic investment in the future of the country's defense and said that it was initially received "with humor and ridicule," but today it has become a reality.

Rama thanked the Israeli company Elbit Systems for its support in establishing the school, calling it "one of the global excellences of the military industry", which has brought its expertise in the field of aviation and military technology to Albania.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the National Flight School will not only serve the needs of Albania, but aims to become a regional training center.

"We have a considerable number of interested parties. The school is open to train and certify new pilots from NATO countries in our region, starting with Kosovo," Rama declared.

He announced that the Minister of Defense has been tasked with discussing with Kosovo authorities the possibility of future pilots being trained in Albania, while the same model of cooperation is also aimed at other allied countries in the region.

Rama also focused on the state of the Air Force, emphasizing that, according to him, Albania now has a fully functional air fleet, after investments in recent years in the modernization of capacities and maintenance of aircraft.

The opening of the National Flight School comes at a time when the Albanian Air Force is undergoing the greatest transformation of recent decades.

After the end of the era of combat aviation, Albania has directed investments towards building new capacities, focusing on the modernization of the Kuçova air base, integration into NATO structures, and the development of new technologies, including unmanned systems.

The Kuçova base, modernized with investments of around 50 million euros, has been transformed into a NATO air base of strategic importance for the region, while the government has announced the development of domestic capacities in the field of drones, in cooperation with international partners.
