Police in the Netherlands have seized the largest amount of cocaine in the country's history, with eight tonnes hidden among bananas in a shipment in the port of Rotterdam.
The drug was discovered on July 13, but the operation was only made public today because of investigations to uncover the origins and the ordering agents, Dutch prosecutors said.
Officials said the cocaine was launched from Panama, passed through Ecuador and arrived in Rotterdam in containers of bananas. The drugs were detected by sniffer dogs and scans.
Its value is around 600 million euros.
This is almost double the previous record of 4.5 tons caught at the port.
Although shipments have been more frequent in recent times but in smaller quantities, they have come mainly from Colombia, the dominant destination, but ecuador is also one of the most important exporters.
"From the Netherlands, cocaine is further distributed to other European countries and albanian-speaking groups appear to play a significant role in this, in particular in trafficking to Italy and Albania," a report on drugs from the United Nations said.
It remains unclear if the shipment was involved in the transport of this car.
