The "McGonigal" case is in the preliminary investigation phase, SPAK head Altin Dumani stated at the Laws Committee in the Albanian Parliament.
Asked by Democratic MP Ivi Kaso, Dumani said that numerous investigations have been conducted in Albania regarding this issue, and a response is now expected regarding legal assistance from foreign authorities, most likely the American side.
"As for the case, which you call the "McGoniga" case, it is in the preliminary investigation phase. Investigations have been carried out in the country, but we are waiting for foreign authorities, as the cooperation of foreign authorities is also needed. And we are waiting for the written request that we have sent them, as well as for legal assistance," said the head of SPAK, Altin Dumani.
Charles McGoniga, a former senior FBI agent in New York, has been convicted in the US of money laundering in connection with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.
He is accused by politicians of having received over 200 thousand dollars from an Albanian figure, while the opposition says this was done as part of his friendship with Edi Rama.
