Bus accident

The Criminal Court of Skopje sentenced on Thursday to 39 years in prison, the six people accused of a bus accident in 2019 near Laskarci in Gostivar, as a result of which 16 people died. The bus driver, Manoil Trifunovski, was sentenced to 14 years in prison, while the head of the "Durmo Tours" company, Durmish Beluli, was sentenced to four years in prison.

Remzi Miftari, responsible for transport in this company, was sentenced to six years in prison, while the employees of the company's technical center, Igor Gjorgjievski, Goran Dukovski and Jane Bovarski, were sentenced to five years in prison. The serious road accident occurred on the Skopje-Tetovo highway, when a bus traveling to Gostivar left the road and rolled into a ditch along the highway.

There were about 50 people on the bus, mostly administration employees and others who were returning to their homes. The court has pronounced for all the defendants a secondary punishment - the ban on carrying out the activity for a duration of five years.

The prosecution has requested the measure of detention for the accused until the final verdict is obtained, while the defense has requested lighter measures, due to the fact that some of the convicts are already under security measures. This accident caused many reactions in opinion, due to the prolongation of the judicial procedure and "suspicions of political influences with the aim of saving certain persons and placing the blame only on the bus driver".

The judicial process also risked a retrial, due to the appointment of the judge of the case in the Court of Appeal. But, after the reaction of the defense side, family members and the wider public, the judge has returned to her duty to make a decision on this case. /REL
