The activity of Albanian drug networks was on the rise in Greece during 2022, estimates a recent report of the Greek Anti-Drug Department.

According to the Voice of America , the report says that over 40 percent of the cannabis blocked in Greece in 2022 came from Albania, while Albanian networks are second only to Greek ones in the trafficking and distribution of heroin and cocaine.

The report says that one in four arrested last year for criminal offenses in the field of narcotics was Albanian. Albanians play the biggest role in the trafficking and distribution of cocaine, where one in three arrested was an Albanian.

During 2022, 885 Albanian citizens were arrested in Greece for crimes related to the transportation and distribution of cannabis, out of 748 who were arrested in 2021. The total amount of cannabis, processed and unprocessed, seized in 2022 in Greece was 6.2 tons, while about 2.5 tons were identified as coming from Albania", says the report of the Greek Anti-Drug Agency.

According to the report, raw cannabis was imported into Greece, mainly through the land border from Albania with vehicles adapted to hide the amount of narcotic substance, but also with animals, such as mules or donkeys.

Albanian networks are also active in the trafficking and distribution of heroin, where Albanian citizens made up 19% of members of criminal groups, ranked after Greek citizens who made up 68% of criminal groups.

Even in cocaine trafficking and distribution, Albanians made up 31% of the members of organized criminal groups, ranked second after the Greeks, who made up about 57% of the arrested perpetrators.
