Pope Leo XIV, who was diagnosed with lung cancer, underwent a three-hour operation yesterday. The Vatican says the operation was successful and the Pope is in good health. The Pope underwent surgery at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome and is expected to remain there for about a week.
"The lung surgery that Pope Leo XIV underwent at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome was completed successfully, within the deadlines and according to the prescribed procedure. After the operation, the Holy Father has returned to his hospital room," the Vatican Press Office announced.
The lung tumor was first discovered during what the Vatican has described as a "routine checkup."
Before the Pope arrived at the hospital, dozens of believers gathered to greet him, expressing their support and wishes for a speedy recovery. The Pope responded with smiles and greetings from his car.
