The White House has asked the United States Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, to resign after The Wall Street Journal reported that she had solicited $100,000 from a Donald Trump donor before her confirmation hearing last year.

The news was announced by White House spokeswoman Katie Zacharia, who said the administration had asked Guilfoyle to leave office.

"We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a great asset to the team and we wish her the best," Zacharia said Tuesday.

The Wall Street Journal report links the resignation request to the allegation that Guilfoyle had solicited $100,000 from a Trump donor in the period before her confirmation hearing for the position of ambassador to Greece took place.

Guilfoyle was appointed US ambassador to Greece by the Trump administration and had assumed office after completing the confirmation process.
