A serious incident has shaken the area of Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples in Italy, where a 33-year-old woman, seven months pregnant, lost her life along with the baby girl she was carrying.
Following the tragedy, authorities have opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident and determine whether the death could have been prevented. The woman, Greta Astarita, a mother of one, had developed severe pain in her hip area, which prompted her family to take her to the San Leonardo hospital.
After medical visits and examinations, the 33-year-old woman was discharged from the hospital, as her condition did not require hospitalization, according to the doctors. However, after returning home, the woman began to experience severe pain again and her condition worsened. According to the preliminary reconstruction of the event, she also lost consciousness, prompting her family to urgently transport her to the same hospital for a second time.
The situation deteriorated rapidly after her return to the hospital. According to family members, doctors initially informed them of the death of the baby the 33-year-old was carrying in her womb. Later, after a dramatic stay in the intensive care unit at the Castellammare di Stabia hospital, the woman's death was confirmed on Saturday afternoon.
The family has filed a complaint with the police, who are investigating the case. The investigation aims to clarify what happened during the woman's two hospital visits, as well as whether the medical assessment and treatment during the first visit were appropriate. Authorities will need to determine whether there were signs that required hospitalization or further intervention, and whether the tragedy could have been prevented.
Until the investigation is complete, there is no official conclusion on the cause of death or possible medical responsibilities. The incident has left the 33-year-old's family in mourning, while it is expected that the investigation will shed light on the circumstances of this double tragedy.
