Former Juventus captain and world champion with Italy, Alessandro Del Piero is ready for the big return to football. We are not talking about a relegation to the green field, but to challenge Gabriele Gravina for the position of head of the Italian Football Federation.
The current head of the Italian federation will compete for a third term, but in the last few hours the name of Del Piero has been circulating as the rival who can defeat him.
At the moment there is no official announcement, but the candidacy of the former Juventus captain can be made official in a few days.
According to La Repubblica, Del Piero has already been contacted to explore his possible availability and he has denied to those closest to him that he has rejected the offer.
In short, he is determined to accept the challenge on the right terms. It is not yet known who will support him, but certainly a former footballer of his level, world champion in 2026 with Lippi's Italy, will have powerful lobbyists by his side.
Behind him can be a large part of the coaches and clubs of the Serie A, as the league has often ended up at war with Gravina. In particular, Del Piero's biggest supporter would be Claudio Lotito, one of Gravina's fiercest enemies.
Del Piero's eventual return, aged just 50, would be the first move in world football since he hung up his boots in 2014.
Beppe Bergomi, world champion in 1982, commented on Alex Del Piero's possible candidacy for FIGC president, saying "it would be perfect".
"I know Alex well because we work together. I know what his opinion is, I know how he sees football, he is a prepared guy, he wants to do well. If it was like that, it would be excellent, because I am a character of depth and culture. I would welcome him, now that he is 50 years old, he is ready", said the former defender of Italy.
