The agricultural pharmaceutical trade of the 7 companies that dominate the market in Albania provides them with huge profits.

Whenever crops are affected by a disease, the farmer is put on alert, and to save the crop, he has to use the expensive poison pump. Farmers often denounce the quality of these agricultural medicines, where for the same disease they have to use the pump with different pesticides.

If we look at the data provided by Top Channel, these companies sell pesticides to farmers that are produced outside the EU territory.

Pesticides enter our country from China, India, Jordan and Kazakhstan, countries that do not always guarantee safety. Specifically, for the year 2025 and the first 8 months of 2026, 748 tons of Chinese and Indian poisons were imported into Albanian customs, worth 2.68 million euros. These pesticides are cheap for businessmen, but not for farmers who buy them as if they were European preparations.

"Pesticides are what we call a double-edged sword. They are very necessary in certain circumstances. The farmer does not only save on pesticides, but also saves on fertilizers because they are also provided by the soil. Pesticides account for somewhere around 30% of production costs," said Ilir Kristo, an expert on agricultural lands.

Agricultural pesticides from third countries find their way to Albania through the law. For the Pesticide Registration Commission located in the Ministry of Agriculture, it is important that the active ingredient of the pesticide is registered in Europe, but on the other hand, this same commission overlooks the physicochemical properties which are many times lower than in those preparations produced in the EU.

This means that the Chinese medicines that grow our fruits and vegetables do not fight the disease properly, which is why the farmer, faced with the weakness of the pesticide, is forced to spray the produce several times.

"Often it may have a well-known product name, but it may be a product that is not used where it should be," said Kisto.

It is the Ministry of Agriculture that should analyze the flood of pesticides imported by the companies: Agro-Blend shpk, SHEGAJ-AGR, MELDI sh.pk, ARLI INTERNACIONAL, AGROHELP SH.PK, AGRO-ZANI, and INTERLOGJISTIC, as these poisons play a crucial role in food safety and the health of citizens.
