Bajram Begaj will be the 8th president of the Republic of Albania, after being voted yesterday in the Assembly with 78 votes, four against and one abstention. He officially takes office on July 24, 2022.
But what are the issues that Begaj is expected to inherit from the current president, Ilir Meta?
The first is the issue of the maritime border with Greece, where the two governments have decided to turn to the International Court of Justice in The Hague. A few days ago, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said that negotiations between the two countries have been blocked by President Ilir Meta. The signature for the case to go to the International Court is expected to be decided by the new president Bajram Begaj.
The second is Justice, another area where Begaj's role will be seen. The Constitutional Court remains incomplete, as are appointments to the Judicial Appointments Council, when debates between the majority and the Head of State have been fierce.
We recall that after the vote in the Assembly, Bajram Begaj held a meeting today with former President Alfred Moisiu, while in the coming days he is expected to meet former presidents Bamir Topi and Rexhep Meidani. It is not known whether from these meetings, Begaj is taking advice from former presidents or not.
