Young people reject politics

Youth involvement in politics is still quite low in Albania, and national and international organisations are aiming to encourage young people to be more active at the local level. Some of the country's counties such as the one in Kumanovo have been significantly affected the last two three years by the mass emigration of young people and this makes their role in local policies more difficult.

Sergey Sotiri, has completed his studies in Justice and the quality of the local creed of the Democratic Party Youth Forum is participating in Kumanovo at a table with young people from various potlike forces. Youth participation in politics marks year after year of decline, Says Sergey.

"In recent local elections I have noticed that the political representation of young people has fallen due to distrust and because in these 30 years young people are not represented enough in both the Albanian parliament and municipal councils," he says of the Voice of America.

While Sokol Haxhiu, who heads the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, which is operating in several Balkan countries, including Albania, says they are playing a role in empowering young people at the local level through tables and joint activities. Not seeing the possibility of engagement many young people emigrate says Mr. Haxhiu.

"The level of youth involvement in politics across the country is apathetic and this is also a major problem. Not seeing the possibility of analysing, not seeing the possibility of inclusion young people reduce immigration as opportunities for education, as opportunities for living, as opportunities to make careers", says Mr Haxhiu.

Mr. Haxhiu says that despite the immigration order there are very good young people to work with.

"Despite the great immigration order there is a very good core of young people, but the need is to work with them today so that we don't lose them and position them better where they are to gain more power and raise their voices for their problems," he says.

While Dea Hill, which is involved in the Socialist Party Youth Forum, said they are making efforts to involve young people more in political life.

"Unfortunately the commitment of young people is not as comprehensive as it should have been. There is not as much interest as expected, but the more time passes we are pushing friends and friends to be more participatory and this has begun to complicate them as well and participation is beginning to improve," she says.

Dea further says that young people must address their problems by seeking solutions.

"We ourselves don't show the problems we have with each other, we don't address them to all the relevant powers that can help us solve them," she says.

Young people from political forces in Kumanovo agree to urge the Municipal Council to be involved in monitoring meetings when dealing with problems related to youth policies.

This is seen by them as a first possibility that they will cooperate more regardless of political affiliations.

The district of Kumanovo, according to bureau data from the Institute of Statistics, marked in January 2022 about three thousand fewer inhabitants where the vast share of leavers are young compared to January 2021.

Data at the national level say that in Albania there are about 28,000 fewer young people in January 2022, with January 2021 grouping between 15 and 30 years old.

In addition to immigration Sergio Sotiri says he sees with concern especially in recent years a phenomenon related to young people and includes their tendency for rapid enrichment.

“Fatkeqësisht në këtë vend është ngritur modeli i gabuar që ne të shikojmë të ardhmen tonë. Ne shikojmë që pasurimi i shpejtë, për shkak të gjendjes së mjerueshme ekonomike, tërheq më shumë vëmendje tek të rinjtë. Për mendimin tim kjo është tepër shqetësuese sepse këtu ka humbur interesi që të rinjtë të arrijnë të bëhen mjekë të zotët, inxhinerë të zotët dhe shumë të rinj zgjedhin rrugë dytësore me shumë kosto dhe rrezik për jetën e tyre”, thotë ai.

Operacione ndërkombëtare policore të Interpol-it kanë provuar zhvendosjen e aktivitetit jo të ligjshëm të këtyre të rinjve nga disa qarqe prolematike në Shqipëri në kultivimin e drogës drejt këtyre vendeve.
