The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, has published on the official website the decree of the law for the construction of the new Port of Durrës, despite criticism from the opposition and concerns raised by the European Union.

The new project includes a yacht harbor and high-rise buildings in the area where the Port of Durrës is currently located.

The law on the port was recently voted in the Parliament of Albania, despite the protest of the opposition, which describes the project as an affair.

The Democratic Party asked the president not to decree this law, requesting its return for review in the Assembly.

Likewise, some PD deputies have appealed the law to the Constitutional Court.

The controversial agreement was concluded between the Albanian government and the companies Eagle Hills Real Estate Development, Albania Seaports Development Company sh.a and Nshmi Development LLC, for the strategic investment project "Durres Marina & Yachts".

The law provides for the free transfer of a land area of ​​812,600 m2 in favor of investors, while the government kept secret a part of the agreement, which is related to the data of the beneficial owners of one of the companies behind the investment.

The delegation stated a few days ago that the EU had canceled a grant of 27 million euros for investments in the previous port project, as a result of "modification of the project and change of use of the current port".
