From the municipality of Berat to the Local Government, who is Ervin Demo
Ervin Demo

With a British academic background, Ervin Demos' journey from vice-rector to head of the municipality of Berat, Minister of Local Government and today Minister of Interior

Ervin Demo is an Albanian academic with a managerial, administrative, local government and politician career engaged with the socialist majority. He was born in Berat in 1982, today 44 years old. His professional training is mainly in the field of management, administration and higher education, while over the years he has moved from academia to various levels of public administration and then into politics.

Demo completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the United Kingdom, and then pursued postdoctoral studies at the University of Bologna, with a focus on management and academic development.

His academic career is closely linked to the University of Tirana. Since 2004, he has been a full-time lecturer at the Department of Management, Faculty of Economics. From 2012 to 2016, he held the position of Vice-Rector of the University of Tirana.

In 2017, Demo was appointed Deputy Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, a position he held until the end of 2018. On June 30, 2019, Ervin Demo was elected Mayor of Berat. He later won a second term, leading the municipality until 2025.

During his tenure in Berat, his public profile was particularly associated with:

urban development;
improvement of public services;
tourism;
local administration;
transparency and citizen participation;
city development projects.
After the 2025 parliamentary elections, Demo became a deputy of the Berat district and in September 2025 was appointed Minister of State for Local Government in the Rama government. As of this Friday, September 11, 2026, Ervin Demo has been selected to take over the leadership of the Ministry of Interior, replacing Besfort Lamallari.

Security and Order

Mr. Demo, in politics for more than a decade, has not been rumored once or denounced by political opponents or the media for links to organized crime, subservience to it, or corruption affairs.

The Law on the State Police clearly states that the role of the Minister is managerial. Security and Order, under his authority, are the competence of the State Police, which is an apolitical and independent structure.

Demo, likewise, is not a lobbying of interest groups or clans, even within the socialist majority. His career, starting from the auditors to the Ministry of Force, turns out to be his proof of whether he will achieve success through the force of example.

The Ministry of Interior and Interior Ministers are often central political figures from both camps, whether from the current Majority or the current Opposition.
