Days after two schools in Tirana were closed by order of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan because they were, apparently, "terror centers" run by exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen.

The Greek newspaper ' Ekathimerini ' writes that the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama traveled to Ankara will meet with the Islamic leader.

According to 'Ekathimerini', the Albanians learned about the trip from a photo he posted on social networks where he appears with Erdogan, without giving any other comments. Therefore, it is not surprising that speculation about the purpose of his visit spread in the public sphere.

The solution to the mystery came only a few days later, in Strasbourg, speaking at the Assembly of the Council of Europe, Rama sang Erdogan's praises with such passion that it caused reactions.

Frustration spread when he famously lashed out in Albania's parliament, sarcastically against the representative of the European United Left, Greek MP Nina Kasimati, who criticized him for cozying up to Turkey. As a result, the leaders of the political groups in the council canceled a dinner they had organized in his honor.

Rama chose that forum to praise his "big brother" and his strategic ally in the eyes of the Europeans, who have also been targeted by Erdogan's threats.

There is something contradictory and inexplicable in the political aspect in this "romance" between the Albanian prime minister and the Turkish president. Because just as Rama wants to unite his country more strongly with Erdogan's Islamic agenda, people in Albania have their eyes firmly turned towards the West and its way of life.

The Albanian people, and especially the young, are leaving the country in droves and not because they are looking for Erdogan's "paradise", as Rama greeted. The exodus has become so acute in fact, that the British ambassador in Tirana called on young Albanians not to leave their country.

And if, as Rama claims, Albania's interests lie on the other side of the Aegean, then why does the country want to be part of NATO and the European Union?

Could it be, instead as is openly said in Albania and whispered in the halls of European diplomacy that it is Rama's personal interests that are leading him to this strange Balkan dance with Erdogan?

And will the Europeans accept a Turkish satellite Albania in the Adriatic and central Mediterranean?

Of course not, but in the absence of a viable alternative, they are forced to put all their eggs in Rama's basket. The United States, however, is said to be "shopping./ Taken from  Ekathimerini adapted VoxNews.
