The opening of the first chapter of negotiations between Albania and the European Union was blocked by Athens last year, which used its veto at the height of tensions with Tirana due to the Fredi Beleri case.
Asked if the Greek veto will hold Albania's European journey hostage again this year, Foreign Minister Igli Hasani said that there have been discreet negotiations with Athens to prevent something like that.
"The engagement with Greece has been constant, with the Greek authorities on the issue of opening the first chapter. It was a discreet engagement, not with statements and phone calls," Hasani said.
The Foreign Minister further commented on the clashes that blocked Albania last December in Brussels, hinting that relations with Greece have begun to melt.
"In the history of two peoples, two of the oldest realities in the region, an individual cannot break a century-old relationship and we are at this stage where we value our historical neighbors, which are Greece, Italy and Turkey, to the maximum. Certainly, let's not forget how much has happened and has been done between Albania and Greece, with difficult moments and other very good ones. The two peoples are very close and will continue to be very close, and we see the European journey with the state of Greece as well", declared Hasani.
Regarding the maritime border issue and bilateral discussions to send it to the Hague Court, Hasani explained that there are no new developments in this direction.
The minister underlined that in the negotiations with Greece on a multitude of topics, attention has been paid to Albania's European journey.
"We have some files that we need to work on. We must maximize where the results are more concrete and we must postpone where the interests are more immediate and the most important thing in this regard is the verification of the date for the second intergovernmental conference that paves the way for Albania to join as soon as possible of the EU ", said Hasani.
The Foreign Minister also appreciated the voting with 96 votes in favor by democrats and socialists of the joint statement, initiated by Shpëtim Idrizi's PDIU, where he asks the government to increase efforts with Greece to lift the martial law.
Hasani said that this is an important step that shows that Tirana reached out to Athens to find a solution to this issue.
"The assembly, with an initiative of some deputies, has already offered Albania and Greece a document that extends its hand to start thinking once again about this important issue. I think that the importance of our two countries should overcome every obstacle and move forward by becoming a member of the EU together without the shadow of the past", concluded Hasani.
