Greece expects the division of the sea with Albania to be finalized before June
Rama and Mitsotakis

On December 22, the postponed visit of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the areas inhabited by Greek minorities in the south of Albania will take place. Mitsotakis' visit will start from Himara and then to Derviçan.

It seems that the preparations for this visit have been undertaken by the head of Greek diplomacy, Niko Dendias, who after Belgrade will visit Tirana the next day. 24 hours before his boss visits the areas of the Greek minority, Dendias will discuss with his counterpart Olta Xhaçka and Prime Minister Edi Rama the technical details of the presentation in The Hague of the file for the division of maritime areas between the two states.

The Greek side expects to make progress on signing a joint agreement as soon as possible within the first half of 2023 so that both countries can appeal to the International Court of Justice in The Hague to resolve their disputes on the issue of delimitation of maritime zones.

Important steps in this direction were made during the last visit of Prime Minister Mitsotakis to Albania for the Summit of the European Union - Western Balkans, which took place at the beginning of December in Tirana.

"Greece has proven that it can solve such unresolved issues with the sole guidance of international law," Mitsotakis declared during his stay in Tirana.

The reason that the Greek side wants to close this pending issue as soon as possible is, on the one hand, Turkey's aggressive policy in the region, which is expected to intensify in the coming months due to the presidential elections

On the other hand, if Greece signs the demarcation of the Exclusive Economic Zone with Albania, then according to the Greek press the noose tightens for Tripoli and Ankara, the only countries in the region that refuse to implement the provisions of international law. Athens has become more determined to share maritime space, especially after the recent Turkey-Libya agreement that brought continental shelf discussions back to the fore in the region.

Diplomatic sources, according to Greek journalists, testify that the Albanian side appears positive in accelerating this process, but demands from Athens more active involvement in the Kosovo issue as well as support in the process of accelerating Albania's membership in the European Union. So far, no technical level meeting between the two states has taken place to further the agreement.

A central obstacle regarding the demarcation is the influence of the Ereikousa and Othona islands, as Albania does not accept the principle of the median line and the full influence of these islands.
