Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha has asked to reinstate the lustration law. Berisha says that the Assembly is deliberately blocking the law because the majority wants to hold high officials hostage.
"As you know, there are a series of initiatives of the parliamentary group which have been kept in Linda's drawers of the parliament for months and months by order of Edi Rama in the most absurd, unfair way and it continues as if nothing happens.
For more than 6 months, we have sent the lustration law to the parliament, this law is the law that not only identifies deputies, judges and prosecutors, high officials for their former cooperation or not for the security of the state, but also their removal from task. This law was applied in 1996. In 1997, the law was not rejected, but lustration as a component of the law continued for a while as such. This law was returned to the parliament in 2008 and at the request of Rama the Constitutional Court rejected it. The Court's decision was unconstitutional as it was constitutional in 1996. They want to hunt witches, because they don't want lustration. They want to introduce amendments, so they want to hold high officials hostage whom the lustration law would remove from office. This is unacceptable for us, we demand the conduct of the law.
