Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed from Brussels, "disappointed and outraged" by the attitude of the Albanian government and the detention of the Mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri.

During a press conference, after the end of the summit, Mitsotakis sent a harsh message to Tirana, while he said that he had informed his counterparts about this case.

"I had the opportunity to inform my counterparts about what is happening today in Albania in the case of the elected mayor of Himara and to express my disappointment and indignation at the fact that an elected mayor is actually arrested two days after his election and is in prison, for us, with dubious procedural provisions".

The Greek Prime Minister describes the Beleri case as "a blow to the rule of law and to Albania's efforts to respect the European acquis", while saying that this will be an element of the Greek assessment of Albania's European path

"Respecting the basic rules of the rule of law is a non-negotiable condition for any country that plans to become a member of the European family. I want to believe that this message has been fully understood in Albania as well."

Mitsotakis made it clear that the Beleri case is not an issue that Greece "will let pass like this", implying that there will be other reactions, until the release of Beleri.
