US First Lady Melania Trump has announced an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to establish a temporary ceasefire in the southern Ukrainian town of Oleshky, in order to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians who wish to leave, Anadolu reports.

According to the White House, the local ceasefire is expected to begin on October 29.

"The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a frontline town, on the brink of disaster. The remaining population in Oleshky consists mainly of elderly residents, who are in urgent need of medical care, medicine, food and clean drinking water," Trump said in a statement.

"The residents of Oleshky have limited electricity, live among mined roads, and face regular military attacks. It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the ability to bring humanitarian aid to the city and evacuate the elderly would be impossible," the US First Lady added.

The White House announced that the First Lady and her representative have worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to determine the terms of the ceasefire.
