Dolly Parton, who rose from a humble childhood to the pinnacle of American music and became one of the country's most beloved stars and the "queen" of country music, died Tuesday at her home in Nashville, according to a family statement. She was 80.

A statement from her nephew, Bryan Seaver, said Parton passed away "peacefully." According to the family, a small, private ceremony will be held, with only her immediate family members in attendance.

During a career that spanned more than half a century, Parton reflected the best of American culture through her music, writing more than 3,000 songs. Among them was “Coat of Many Colors,” a heartfelt dedication to her mother, who sewed clothes in the family home in rural Tennessee.

She wrote and performed songs about love and broken hearts, such as “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You.” While “9 to 5,” the title song of the film of the same name, in which Parton also starred, became an anthem for American women and workers.

Parton released a total of 49 albums and won 11 Grammy Awards. She became one of the most successful country music artists to break into the pop market, consistently scoring hits on the pop charts, including "Islands in the Stream," a duet with Kenny Rogers.

In her later years, Parton channeled much of her success into charity. She founded a library program that has distributed more than 300 million books to children around the world.
