Millions of antelopes cross South Sudan: One of the largest animal migrations on

For decades, the Serengeti was considered the ultimate symbol of Africa's great animal migrations. But in South Sudan, there is an even lesser-known phenomenon of staggering proportions.

The Boma-Badingilo Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List this summer, making South Sudan part of the list for the first time.

The area includes savannas, wetlands and vast plains where one of the most spectacular mammal migrations in the world takes place.

Millions of animals, mainly antelopes, but also tiang, Mongalla gazelles and other species, move through the territory following water and seasonal pastures.

An aerial count conducted in recent years showed that the scale of the migration is much larger than previously thought.

The view from the air is extraordinary: thousands of antelope move simultaneously across the savannah, creating columns that stretch to the horizon.

The area has another special significance. South Sudan has gone through decades of conflict, yet this ecosystem has managed to preserve one of Africa's greatest natural phenomena.

UNESCO status could bring more international attention, protection and, in the future, great potential for nature tourism.

The gist: Boma-Badingilo, home to one of the world's largest mammal migrations, has become South Sudan's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
