Popular tourist city bans bicycles in central areas after cyclist hits mayor

Como Mayor Alessandro Rapinese has decided to ban bicycles from around 30 streets in the historic center of the Italian city. The measure will come into effect in September and will require cyclists to get off their bikes and push them in designated areas.

The decision came after an incident in July, when Rapinese was hit by an electric bike as he was leaving city hall. The mayor said that personal experience made him better understand the danger that bicycles can pose in busy downtown areas.

"I know what it means to be hit by one of these bikes," he declared.

Rapinese has defended the measure as a matter of public safety. According to him, the aim is to reduce risks for pedestrians in the historic center, where the streets are narrow and there are large numbers of tourists and residents.

The ban will not only apply to electric bicycles. The rule will also apply to traditional bicycles, as the Italian Highway Code does not distinguish between these two categories in this case.

Como's historic center, surrounded by Roman walls, is now part of a limited traffic zone, known as a ZTL. Bicycles have become an important means of transportation for many residents, and some of the streets affected by the mass are among the widest in the old part of the city.

These roads are also heavily used by delivery services, so the decision could also affect the activity of local businesses.

The bicycle ban is just one part of the new traffic rules the municipality is introducing in the center of Como. Authorities aim to manage the increase in tourist numbers and limit vehicle traffic in the historic area.

Under the new rules, some vehicles will need an annual permit to enter the ZTL, while daily entries will require a permit costing 3 euros. Supplies for shops and restaurants will also be limited to a certain time. Delivery vehicles will be allowed to enter from 06:00 to 23:00.

Meanwhile, tourists staying in hotels within the restricted area will be able to enter by vehicle only if the hotel they have booked has parking.

The decision on bicycles has sparked strong reactions from residents. Opponents of the measure argue that bicycles are a widely used mode of transportation in the city and that banning them on a large number of roads could create difficulties for residents and businesses.

An online petition has also been launched to oppose the decision, with the aim of blocking the municipality's decision.

The mayor, on the other hand, insists that the decision is related to safety and the need to establish clearer rules in a historic center that is facing an ever-increasing influx of tourists.
