Sandra Bullock has spoken openly about the loss of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, who passed away in August 2023 after a three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The 62-year-old actress spoke about this difficult period in a new episode of the podcast "SmartLess", where she revealed that Randall had asked for his diagnosis to be kept private.
"He asked me not to share it with anyone," Bullock said. "I wasn't allowed to talk about it. That was his request, and I tried to respect that."
She explained that she understood the reason for his request, but it made the situation even more isolating for her, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It made the process even more isolating for me," she said, referring to the heavy burden she was carrying as she dealt with her partner's diagnosis.
Bullock revealed that, in a way, she had begun to mourn Randall long before he passed away.
“I started grieving Bryan four years before he died,” she said. “He was sick for half of our relationship.”
The actress added that she felt like "my man left long before his body." According to her, she didn't have a chance to fully process this pain until after his death, because during her illness she was focused on caring and everything she had to do.
Bullock and Randall raised her son, Louis, daughter Laila, and Randall's daughter from a previous relationship, Skylar Staten Randall, together.
Recalling her partner's illness, Bullock described ALS as a long process of elimination, during which doctors constantly run tests and assess the progression of symptoms.
"You have to plan quietly," she said, adding that she was used to dealing with illnesses because of her parents' health history.
The actress said that the disease itself did not scare her, but the biggest concern was her two children, who were also dealing with the situation, especially her young daughter, who saw Randall as a father figure.
For a long time, the only person who knew about Randall's diagnosis was Bullock's sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado. Later, the actress decided to tell some of her closest friends, including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, Jason Bateman's wife.
Bullock indicated that the situation became even more serious when physical illness was accompanied by mental health problems.
"When the physical illness was combined with the mental health aspect, it was a triad that became very dark," she said.
Following Randall's death in August 2023, his family confirmed that he had passed away "peacefully" after a three-year battle with ALS. At the time, the family explained that Randall had chosen to keep his battle with the disease private from the start and that those caring for him had respected his wishes.
Randall, who had first worked as a model and then as a photographer, met Bullock in 2015. Their relationship became more public later that year, when they attended Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux's wedding together.
Following Randall's death, Bullock took a break to take care of herself and her children. A source close to the actress previously revealed that she spent a lot of time at home, focusing on recovery and family, before returning to work.
Bullock will soon return to the cinema with the film Practical Magic 2, where she stars alongside Nicole Kidman and other cast members.
