Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Serbia would ignore sanctions imposed on top Bosnian Serb officials for understating a 1995 peace deal that ended a war that left more than 100,<> killed and millions homeless.
He said Bosnian Ethnic Serb officials under U.S. sanctions would still be welcome in Serbia.
"The Republic of Serbia will treat sanctions as if they did not exist," Vucic said during a visit to the Bosnian Serb region. "It's difficult, but that's the only possible decision," he said.
Among the four Bosnian Serb officials sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department are Zelka Cvijanovic, a Serb member of the Tripartite Bosnian Collective Presidency, and the prime minister of the Bosnian Serb entity, Radovan Viskovic.
The separatist leader of Republika Srpska in Bosnia, Milorad Dodik, has been previously sanctioned by the United States.
All four officials are said to have participated in drafting a law that the United States and other international officials say undermines Bosnia's unity by ignoring the rulings of the country's Constitutional Court.
The Bosnian War, which began in 1992, ended with the Dayton accords organized by the United States, which established two regions: the Republika Srpska and the Bosniak-Croat Federation.
The United States recently imposed sanctions on the pro-Russian head of Serbia's security agency, Aleksandar Vulin, accusing him of involvement in illegal arms trade, drug trafficking and abuse of office.
There is widespread fear that Serbia, an ally of Russia, could inflame tensions in the Balkans to divert at least some of the world's attention from the war in Ukraine.
Serbian populist leader Vucic attended a memorial ceremony in the Bosnian Serb entity for tens of thousands of Serbs who in 1995 fled Croatia after a Croatian military offensive that marked the end of the war.
During Croatian Operation Storm, which began on 4 August 1995, the Croatian Army liberated a large part of Croatian territory that had been under the control of Serb rebels since 1991.
Croatian forces achieved their military goals in just three days, overthrowing the internationally unknown state of Serbian rebels, the Republika Srpska Krajina. The anniversary is marked every year in Croatia as a national triumph.
Operation Storm by Serbs and their officials is seen as a tragedy because it caused a large displacement of Serb civilians from Croatia. In that operation, several hundred Serbs were killed. /VOA
