The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić , has described as "hypocritical" the reaction of the international community regarding a large number of Kosovo citizens who were stopped by the Serbian authorities at the border points of Serbia days ago.

Vucic said on Friday that in the past days "no bus has been stopped at the Serbian border", but several people have been detained in Serbia for questioning.

On April 17, according to authorities in Kosovo, Serbia detained over 1,400 Kosovars for more than 20 hours at its border points with Croatia and Hungary, who were transiting through Serbia.

The European Union and the US Department of State reacted to this, criticizing Serbia for violating the agreement on free movement between the two countries.

"There is no one in the world who has not reacted [to this]", said Vucic, evaluating the reaction of the international community as "hypocritical".

"Two or three people were detained for questioning and all were released. One of them was questioned because he was in the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army)," said Vucic at a military exercise in Peshter.

Among those detained were ten police officials, including the Deputy Director General of the Kosovo Police with Serbian nationality, Dejan Jankovic.

The Government of Kosovo described these actions as Serbia's revenge against the support from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for Kosovo's membership in this organization.

Serbia denied the allegations, saying the delays were caused by additional security measures at the border, and that the movement of Kosovar citizens "has not been restricted".

The US State Department called on Serbia to refrain from unilateral and uncoordinated actions, to act transparently and in full compliance with the law regarding the Kosovar citizens detained in Serbia yesterday.

"Arbitrary or unjustifiably long detentions, especially if they target Kosovo Police officers, will be seen as escalating actions that undermine peace and stability," a State Department spokesperson told Radio Free Europe on April 18.

On April 18, some tourist organizations from Kosovo told Radio Free Europe that they had no problems with the ban at the border from that day./ REL
