Mall killer killed six, injured dozens, police: He was mentally ill and targeted

The 40-year-old who carried out an attack at a shopping center in Sydney appears to have targeted women, according to Australian authorities.

Joel Cauchi created panic in the mall by attacking people with a knife. Five of the six people who died were women. Several others, including a baby, were injured.

The New South Wales police commissioner told Australia's ABC News it was "clear" Cauchi was targeting women.

The only person killed in the attack was security guard Faraz Tahir, 30, who tried to intervene. He was a refugee from Pakistan who had only been in Australia "for a short period of time", Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told Triple M radio on Monday.

"The videos speak for themselves, don't they?" said Commissioner Karen Webb.

“It's clear to me, it's clear to the detectives ... that the offender focused on females and avoided males. "We don't know what was going through the killer's mind and that's why it's important now for detectives to question all the people who knew him," added Commissioner Karen Webb.

The Albanian prime minister also told ABC News that "the gender divide is, of course, troubling."

The four people who were injured during the attack have been released from the hospital. Eight others continue to receive medical attention, with some in serious condition and others in stable condition.

According to authorities, the killer had mental health issues and was fatally shot by a female police officer on Saturday.

He was already known to police but had never been arrested or charged in his home state of Queensland. He was first diagnosed with a mental illness aged 17, Queensland Police said.
