Millions of rupees have been found by protesters in Sri Lanka inside the official residence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The footage is doing the rounds of the web, where the protesters are shown counting the banknotes found. The money found would reportedly be handed over to security forces.
Protesters on Saturday entered Rajapaksa's residence in Colombo's central high-security Fort area after breaking through barricades and demanding his resignation as the country grapples with its worst economic crisis in decades.
Meanwhile, another group of protesters entered the private residence of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and set it on fire.
His only outside communication since the protesters entered the city has been with Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeyëardena, who announced late Saturday night that the President would resign on Wednesday. President Rajapaksa informed the Speaker of this decision to resign after Abeywardena wrote to him asking for his resignation after the all-party leaders' meeting held on Saturday evening.
The Speaker will become acting President in the absence of the President and the Prime Minister. Later, an election must take place among the deputies to choose a new President. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe has also offered to resign.
