Ukraine seeks 1 mln soldiers: Preparing for a long and difficult war

Ukraine says it is preparing for a long and difficult phase of the war with Russia, and Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov declared through Facebook that he hopes to arm a million fighters.

Reznikov noted that Ukraine "will have to plan resources with invariably" and "avoid mistakes" in order to win the war. Already, he said, Russia has suffered a "strategic defeat".

The arrival of foreign weapons and the "addition of domestic military products" would further help to break the balance against Russia, he continued.

But before that, Ukraine was facing extremely difficult weeks ahead.

"No one can say how long it will last. In that period, we will maintain protection mainly with our resources against the enemy furious with resentment," he predicted.

"Increasing sanctions pressure against Russia and increasing foreign aid to Ukraine must create, within a few months, the conditions under which the Kremlin will finally lose all chances of achieving any success. Then there will be a new window of opportunity for Ukraine. In this extremely difficult period, we need unity, cohesion, will and patience," he concluded.
