US President Donald Trump issued a new warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin after continued Russian drone and missile attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine.

"What Vladimir Putin doesn't understand is that if it weren't for me, a lot of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean VERY bad," Trump wrote on Truth Social Tuesday. "He's playing with fire!"

Over the weekend, Trump reacted sharply for the first time to Putin, with whom he had spoken on the phone for two hours last Monday, walking away from the conversation saying he thought it was productive.

However, no progress was made in ending the war, as Russia escalated its attacks on Ukraine throughout the weekend, hitting the country with drone strikes.

Ukrainian officials estimated that about 900 drones were launched by Russia in attacks from Friday to Sunday evening, the Associated Press reported.
