Germany lifts restrictions on long-range missile launches from Ukraine, Merz: We

"We are threatened and we will defend ourselves. There should be no doubt that we must defend ourselves." This was stated today by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a conference in Helsinki with his counterpart, Patteri Orpo, answering a question from journalists about developments in Ukraine.

"If Putin does not even accept the Vatican's mediation, it means he is not interested in the ceasefire at all," Merz stressed.

Meanwhile, Germany and other Ukrainian allies have lifted restrictions on Kiev from launching long-range missiles towards Russia for the first time, the German chancellor said on Monday, after days of massive aerial bombardment of the capital and other regions by Russia.

The move marks a significant shift in the approach of key allies, who had resisted Ukraine's demands to use Western-supplied weapons deep inside Russia.

"There are no longer any restrictions on the range of weapons supplied to Ukraine," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said at a European forum in Berlin on Monday. "Neither from the British, nor from the French, nor from us. Nor from the Americans," he added.

Russia mercilessly attacks civilian targets and bombs cities, Merz said. Ukraine is not doing this and it should remain that way. “But a country that faces an aggressor only within its own territory is not being able to defend itself sufficiently.”

"In other words, Ukraine can now defend itself even by attacking military positions in Russia," Merz stressed.

Russia strongly condemned Chancellor Merz's statements.

The Kremlin said sending long-range weapons would be a dangerous step. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said sending long-range weapons to Ukraine "contradicts Moscow's efforts to find a political solution."

The announcement comes after record drone and missile strikes on Ukraine over the weekend. Russian President Vladimir Putin is facing international pressure to accept a ceasefire deal, including from US President Donald Trump, who has become increasingly frustrated with slow progress.

Ukraine wants to fire Western long-range weapons at Russia. But the victory on the battlefield is not clear.

Merz was appointed chancellor a few weeks ago and his statement is in stark contrast to his predecessor Olaf Scholz, who had repeatedly rejected Ukraine's calls to lift restrictions.
