The leading candidates to be chancellor are now taking part in a live televised debate in Germany, on a panel of eight people, including Friedrich Merz, Olaf Scholz, Robert Habeck and Alice Weidel.

Friedrich Merz declared before the panel that his main priority is “to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible, so that we can be independent of the United States of America in defense.”

"I would never have thought I would have to say something like this on television, but after Donald Trump's statements last week it is clear: this American government does not care about Europe," he declared.

Merz then recounted how Elon Musk has "meddled" in the German elections, calling them "drastic and shameful - similar to what we have heard from Moscow in the past."

Merz said it would be “difficult” to form a government, but added that this was something “we knew before the election.” He also confirmed his stance against a coalition with the AfD.

The CDU leader says "we need to prepare a timeline" for the parties to talk to each other.

"I'm sure we will have formed a government by Easter," he says, which falls in April.
