Taiwan unveiled its most advanced F-16V missile-equipped fighter jet in a rare nighttime display following unprecedented Chinese military exercises around the island.

Chinese forces have been conducting naval and air exercises near Taiwan for days this month after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island, which China claims as its own.

Taiwan has been conducting its own exercises to simulate defense against a Chinese invasion, and on Wednesday air force personnel equipped an F-16V fighter jet with the US-made Harpoon anti-ship missile in a "combat readiness" exercise at an air base in the east. in Hualien County.

Six F-16Vs later flew reconnaissance and training missions at night, including two armed with missiles, according to Taiwan's air force.

"In the face of the threat of recent military exercises by Chinese Communist forces, we have remained vigilant by creating the concept of 'battlefield anywhere and training at any time'... to protect national security," the Taiwanese Air Force said in a statement.

Defense Ministry spokesman Sun Li-fang said Taipei condemned China's actions in recent days, but that the situation was a good opportunity for Taiwan's forces to improve their capabilities.

Taiwan has upgraded its aging fighter fleet in recent years, fearing military action from Beijing and because its air force is under constant pressure from increasingly frequent Chinese incursions into the island's air defense zone.

In November, Taiwan deployed its first squadron of US F-16Vs – an upgraded and much more sophisticated version of the F-16s, which date back to the 1990s.
