Media in Serbia

Before the Kurti-Vucic meeting in Brussels, the Serbian media continue to add fuel to the conflict over travel documents between Kosovo and Serbia. Could the conflict in the region escalate again?

"He is preparing massacres in Kosovo", this is how the boulevard newspaper "Informer" titled an article of its own, with a photo of Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti, while according to the newspaper "Vecernje Novosti" even snipers have been prepared, who will probably eliminate leading politicians of the Serbian minority in Kosovo. Like these two newspapers, almost the entire press of Belgrade smells the war, without having clear evidence for it. The exception is only a few independent media that do not depend on Vucic.

Recently, tensions between Kosovo and Serbia escalated after the Kosovo government's decision to implement new regulations for travelers with Serbian passports and vehicles with Serbian license plates. According to her, when Serbs entered Kosovo, they would be provided with provisional Kosovar documents, and vehicles with Serbian license plates had to be replaced with Kosovar ones within a certain period. Serbia has been practicing this for years for Kosovar citizens. Prime Minister Kurti had been insisting on the so-called "reciprocity" for some time, that is, that the rules apply to both sides.

The fear that Russia could inflame the situation

It is true that these measures were withdrawn within a short time, but the situation is very tense. Some observers even see the real danger of war in the Balkans. One argument being heard is that Russia could use these tensions and open another front through its traditionally ally Serbia, to divert attention from the war of aggression in Ukraine. Serbia is the only EU candidate country that has not imposed sanctions against Moscow. This country condemned the Russian attack and voted against Russia in UN resolutions. But President Vučić, who has governed almost alone for 10 years, is known for his political acrobatics between the East and the West.

How realistic is a new war, where in the 90s Yugoslavia collapsed bloody? Would Serbia really risk facing NATO again, which is present in Kosovo and Bosnia, while neighboring Montenegro and Croatia are members of the transatlantic alliance?

There is probably danger everywhere

"Political elites in this region benefit from nationalism and produce calculated tensions for this," says Mladen Lisanin from the Serbian Institute for Political Studies (IPS). Neither side has an interest in war, but the firefight could get out of control at any moment, says the political scientist.

Indeed, the Serbian media regularly warns of the dangers for Serbs and Serbs simply because they are Serbs. These dangers lurk in Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, but mostly in Kosovo.

Bjelos does not believe that a new war can start, as do many other experts. In the Western Balkan region, governing politicians regularly simulate crises in order to deactivate them themselves and thus present themselves as "stability factors". The EU supports this policy of "stabilocracy", says Bjelos. Critics accuse Brussels of caring more about stability than democracy in the region.

"For this reason, tensions in the region can be expected, but not armed conflicts", says Bjelos. The joint political, diplomatic and military response of the West to the Russian invasion of Ukraine shows the politicians of the Balkans what price they will pay if they cause such a thing."/DW
