In the war between the United States and Iran, a new military technology is being used that could change the way we defend against drones.
It is about the HELIOS laser system, which has been used to shoot down several Iranian drones in recent days.
HELIOS is a high-energy laser weapon with a power of about 60 kilowatts, designed to neutralize drones, aircraft and missiles.
The system was developed by the American defense company Lockheed Martin and is being integrated into US Navy ships to counter new aerial threats.
The system is deployed on the American destroyer USS Preble, which has shot down several Iranian drones during operations in the region.
According to reports, this is one of the first times that the laser weapon has been used in real combat conditions against drones, Euronews reports.
The use of this technology is seen as very important due to the large cost difference between drones and traditional defense systems. Iran uses relatively inexpensive drones such as the Shahed 136, which cost around $20,000 to $50,000.
Meanwhile, much more expensive systems such as the Patriot missile system or THAAD are usually used to shoot them down, where each missile can cost from several million to about 10 million dollars.
In this sense, the HELIOS laser significantly reduces the cost of defense, as it uses electrical energy to hit the target and shooting down a drone can cost only a few cents. The system can be used at lower intensities to disorient the drone's sensors and navigation system, or at higher intensities to overheat and destroy it.
In addition to its role as a weapon, HELIOS also serves as a reconnaissance and surveillance vehicle. It includes very high-resolution cameras, night vision and thermal sensors that can identify and track targets up to about 8 kilometers away.
However, the system also has limitations. The effectiveness of the laser can be reduced by atmospheric conditions such as rain, fog, clouds, smoke or dust, which can scatter the beam and weaken its power.
However, defense experts believe that such laser weapons represent an important step in the development of modern warfare against drones and low-cost aerial threats.
