The mayor of an Italian municipality has sparked controversy in the country with her statement against the practice of entering the sea in clothing other than swimsuits and bikinis.
Anna Maria Cisin has mainly provoked the reactions of Muslims, as her statement about staying on the beach with clothes as unacceptable was provocative to them.
"It is a tourist destination and therefore the behavior of Muslim foreigners who usually enter the water in their clothes is unacceptable. A practice that is causing confusion and creating intolerable consequences for the code of conduct," she said.
In an open letter addressed to the local Muslim community, the mayor of Monfalcone adds: "Those who come from realities other than ours, have the obligation to respect the rules and customs."
"The practice of going to the beach and entering the water in clothes other than swimwear must stop. The forms of Islamization of our territory cannot be accepted, which extend practices with dubious values from the point of view of decorum and hygiene", affirms Cisin, a member of Lega Nord, peremptorily.
The mayor further writes: "Behavior harmful to the respect and dignity necessary in attending these public places negatively affects the attractiveness and has consequences for the managers of the services.
This unacceptable behavior occurs in a context in which there is ever greater damage to the norms, principles and forms that govern community life, thus risking the widening of the rift in the relationship between the vast majority of Monfalcone's residents and the Islamic component."
