Spain "blocks" Kosovo: Even after the liberalization of visas, it does

The liberalization of visas, which is finally arriving for Kosovo, normally applies to all countries of the Schengen area.

But Spain, which does not recognize Kosovo's independence, will not allow Kosovars to travel freely to it again, since this EU member country does not recognize their passports.

The news was confirmed by the spokeswoman of the European Commission for Internal Affairs, Anitta Hipper. Asked if the citizens of Kosovo will be able to travel to Spain, she did not specifically mention this country, only saying that the liberalization will not apply to "one country".

" Recognition of travel documents is a state competence. Among the Schengen countries, all but one state have recognized Kosovo's travel documents. This means that visa liberalization for Kosovo will enable holders of Kosovo passports to travel without visas to all these countries, with the exception of one of them ", she said.

Spain, which takes the next presidency of the European Union on July 1, has been one of the strongest voices against the recognition of Kosovo's citizenship, although during the process of approving the decision on visas, it did not object.

Other countries that do not recognize Kosovo are Greece, Cyprus, Romania and Slovakia, which meanwhile accept passports issued by the Kosovar authorities.

The main reason for Spain's opposition is believed to be Catalonia, because the official Madrid's acceptance of Kosovo's independence could mean that Catalonia would also claim the same, if a majority of its residents so request.
