Russia "accidentally" bombs its own city

The Ministry of Defense in Moscow has said that a Russian warplane accidentally bombed the Russian city of Belgorod, which is located on the border with Ukraine.

The regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, has said that the explosion created a large crater, about 20 meters wide, in the center of the city.

Two women were injured and several buildings were damaged, he said.

The incident happened late Thursday, according to Russian news agencies.

Investigations into this case are said to be ongoing.

Photos and videos on social networks have shown homes damaged by the explosion, while in another, a car is seen on the roof of a building.

Belgorod - a city with 370,000 inhabitants - is about 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

This city is north of the second largest city in Ukraine, Kharkiv.

Residents of that area live under the fear of bombings, since the start of Russia's war in Ukraine, in February of last year.

This is because Russian warplanes often fly over the airspace of this city to reach Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./REL
