Trump and Putin

Former President Donald Trump has recently listed the steps he would have taken if he had been re-elected president - which he says would have avoided the war.

First, according to Trump, "Ukraine should have ended the agreement with Putin".

Trump suggested that Ukraine should have made a deal with President Vladimir Putin to prevent Russia from invading the country.

During an interview on The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show podcast, the former president suggested that Ukraine could have "given up" the territory of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, or agreed not to joined NATO.

The remarks came after Trump was asked for his opinion on a photo shoot of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife Olena for Vogue magazine, which was questioned and criticized as it took place while the country was at war.

"It was not the right thing to do," Trump said, before reiterating his oft-repeated stance that the invasion of Russia "would never have happened" if he were still president.

"He (Putin) would not have done that with me. He wouldn't have done it. At the very least, they should have made a deal," Trump said.

"They could have given up Crimea. They could have done something with NATO, 'Okay, we're not going to join NATO,' and you'd still have your country, because I believe Putin wanted to make a deal," Trump said.

"And now I don't think he wants to do a deal. I think it's much harder to make a deal now. He's blowing up the whole place. I mean, he's going to take over the whole country. And it's very, very sad to see what happened to Ukraine. Very, very sad.”

Trump also said he doesn't believe Putin "ever wanted" to start a war with Ukraine, but now "he'd rather take the whole country, now that he's started."

The former US president added that the Russian president's deployment of hundreds of thousands of troops and a large amount of military equipment along the border of the two countries ahead of the invasion was a "brilliant negotiating tactic" and a golden opportunity for the West.

“And you have hundreds of thousands of people – you may have millions of people, but you have hundreds of dead people. And when you look at those buildings completely burned, those people are all dead. You lost a lot of people. This is a deal that could have been resolved. It should never have happened. But if it did, it could have been solved. He moved 200,000 troops to the border to negotiate, and he couldn't make a deal — and now I'm not sure you can make it very easy." Trump added.

Trump has previously been criticized for his comments leading up to the invasion of Ukraine.

In February, Trump described Putin's tactic of recognizing two self-proclaimed republics in eastern Ukraine and sending Russian troops to the regions under the guise of "peacekeeping operations" as "brilliant" and "very smart."

Trump later doubled down on his praise for the Russian president after the backlash, telling a crowd at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida that Putin was "very smart" as he "had taken over an entire country , because all the West could do was threaten it with sanctions worth $2."

According to Trump, the West was much weaker than it should have been.
