Six years after its discovery in China, the tick-borne alongshan virus (ALSV) has now spread to most of Europe.

German experts come to this conclusion. The Center for Travel Medicine (CRM) in Düsseldorf, Germany, stated:

The virus, which is not linked to any serious disease in humans, has been found in ticks in Finland, France, Russia, Switzerland and now in Germany.

At the University of Veterinary Medicine (TIHO) in the northern German city of Hanover, researchers found evidence of ALSV transmission via ticks to animals such as deer in the northwestern German state of Lower Saxony.

After the publication of a relevant study in the scientific journal "Microorganisms", the scientific director of the CRM, Center for Travel Medicine, Tomas Jelinek, emphasized:

The distribution areas of many native tick species have expanded significantly in recent years. Arachnids are benefiting from mild winters and hotter summer seasons.

Arachnids belong to the group of arthropods. This group includes spiders, scorpions and ticks. They live on land and mainly in hot and rocky places. However, they are also found in places inhabited by people. They have four pairs of legs and breathe with skin lungs. They have poison for self-defense.

However, ALSV has not currently been associated with anything more severe than flu-like symptoms. The most common tick-borne disease in Europe is Lyme, which can be treated with antibiotics in its early stages.

Early summer meningoencephalitis (FSME) is also particularly prevalent in many areas, but can be vaccinated against.
