An Iranian official responsible for promoting Islamic values ​​was suspended from his duties after a video showed him having sex with another man.

The video, posted online, is said to show the head of the Department of Islamic Culture and Guidance in Gilan province, Reza Tsaghati.

He is the founder of a cultural center that focuses on piety and the use of the hijab.

The authenticity of the video, which was originally uploaded to an alternative Telegram channel, has not been verified, the BBC reports. Following the revelations, Tsaghati resigned and authorities are investigating the case.

In an attempt by the government to distance itself from the issue, the Culture Minister said there were no negative reports about Tsaghati before the video was released. Iranian officials were initially silent after the video surfaced on social media.

Finally, Gilan's Department of Cultural and Islamic Guidance issued a statement on July 22, citing a "suspected mistake by the director of Islamic Guidance" in the province. The case was referred to the judicial authorities "for careful examination".

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran and LGBTI people are at risk of harassment, abuse and even violence.
